 Seventeen Aussies traveled to Torbole on Lake Garda, Italy for the 2019 Windsurfer World Championships. With 163 competitors from 18 countries it was a massive affirmation that the Windsurfer Class is back! Incredibly tough racing across Course, Marathon and Slalom was held in 4 weight divisions for men plus the Female division. With 18-22 knot breezes it was fast and tight competition in spectacular scenery. The Australian contingent performed incredibly well in a fleet featuring multiple Olympians, past World Champions and young guns. Heavyweight Nick Bez from Melbourne sailed a very consistent regatta and won the Men's Overall - being named the World Champion for 2019. Hamish Swain from Queensland is the World Youth Champion. Mel Webb from Sydney is the Women's World Freestyle Champion. Process for Election of Office Bearers An election will occur for all committee positions. All nominees must be current financial members of WCAA. Members may nominate themselves or other members. Nominations were collected by a secure online platform until midnight June 5, 2019. A link to vote for all positions will was sent to members on June 13, 2019. Voting will be completed online and closes on Sunday June 16, 2019. Members can vote here The Notice of Race for the first 'official' Windsurfer Class World Championships since the 1990's have been released. The event is shaping up to be BIG - with over 200 competitors from over 20 countries expected.  Over 20 Australians have indicated that they will attend.
International competitors can access charter boards but these are limited. If you are going get booking.  The International Windsurfer Class Association (IWCA) has nominated the Windsurfer as the equipment package for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
World Sailing (WS) has opened a review period for equipment supply post 2020 and the IWCA Executive believes that the Class is well placed to meet the criteria. The presentation to WS can be veiwed here A decision on a short list will be recommended by the WS Technical commitee. These boarsd will then go on for further review including on the water comparison. Exciting times.  Monster fleet crowns Windsurfer Class resurgence on Lake Macquarie The 42nd Windsurfer Class Australian Championships scored 4 great days of racing with the first hit-out on the new LT boards a major success. 107 registrations, 10 course races, a fun filled freestyle, 32 heats of slalom and an all in mega marathon filled Lake Macquarie with colour and good vibes. Toronto Amateur Sailing Club did a great job hosting. Breezes were typically 8-12 knots and shifty - giving everyone a shot at the podium. Big crowds of spectators viewed the action up close. A big thank you to all racers for attending and bringing the Windsurfer spirit and energy to the event. Huge shout out to all the volunteers and to the Windsurfer Class admin gurus - Karen Murden, Erin Dunn and Ev Leonard, along with WCAA Secretary Nick Bez for putting in big time and effort to crunch out the results daily. Awesome - click here for a detailed update The Windsurfer Class is back as an International Class after the World Sailing Council ratified the acceptance of the class at its conference in Florida in early November. This means that the Class can again conduct official World Championships and be included in a variety of World Sailing major events.
